Common Problems and Procedures - Network

Introduction / Philosophy

  • Obtaining a new IP address
  • Can't resolve hostname (often detected by netscape)
  • /etc/hosts administration
  • /etc/hosts is maintained by the network team. They modify the DNS database and distribute the file to mc5 from where, as part of the same process, it is further distributed according to mc5:/diska/rdist/etc/hosts/Distfile.

Since virtually all of ESO, excluding VLT, run NIS across all machines, the distribution list comprises mainly NIS servers. For VLT however, because of HPUX/NIS/RTAP interaction problems, the non-NIS'd HP's also appear on the list.

  • /etc/resolv.conf administration
  • Can't access outside
  • Can't access www.eso.org
  • The DNS server serves different addresses each time a request is made for www.eso.org's IP address. Of course this address is retrieved from the local host's DNS cache after the first request. For this reason sometime's people on one machine can access www.eso.org and people on other machines can't. Do nslookup's on the problem machine to determine the IP address that it is using and then try telnet'ing into port 80 on the specified machine.

  • Can't access Lasilla
  • Configuring NCD X terminals
  • Configuring Tektronix X terminals
  • Configuring HP Envizex X terminals (link to VLT docs)
