Starting a Browser ================== *) You must be connected to the internet to use a web browser! (See the "How to Connect to the Internet" HOWTO for details.) *) There are two possible web browsers installed on this PC; Internet Explorer and Firefox. Run whichever one you prefer from the 'Start' button. *) After starting the web browser it will probably try to go to a default page (often referred to as "the browser's homepage", which is different to _your_ homepage), and of course it will take the browser a few seconds to get to this page. If you start typing the URL of your webmail service _while the browser is still loading a page_, then your typing will be in vain! So ... ... Click STOP immediately! Visiting Websites ================= *) When you are sure the browser's home page has stopped being loaded, then enter the URL you want to visit (e.g. www.google.com, www.hotmail.com, www.bbc.co.uk). Saving stuff ============ *) If you want to save an _entire_ page, including all the pictures and headings and adverts and stuff that are embedded in it, then from the browser's 'File' menu, select 'Save As ..', navigate your way to your 'html' directory, and save it somewhere under there. (Perhaps you want to create a directory under there first called 'saved Web Pages' or something like that?) The result of this will be two things: i) an HTML file (e.g. Gardening.html) ii) a subdirectory containing all the embedded elements that appear in the page (e.g. Gardening_files) in which you will find all the pictures, and possibly other sorts of files that appeared 'in' the page. *) If you want to save a single image from a page, then right-click on it and select 'Save image as', navigate your way to your 'images' directory, and save it somewhere under there. (Perhaps you want to create a directory under there first called 'Images from Web Pages' or something like that?) *) If you want to save just _some_ text from a page, then the easiest way is to cut-and-paste it from the web page into either Word or Notepad and then save that into your Word-documents or Text-documents directory, respectively. Using Bookmarks =============== *) To save a bookmark in Internet Explorer, from the 'Favorites' pulldown menu select 'Add to Favorites'. *) To save a bookmark in Firefox, from the 'Bookmarks' pulldown menu select 'Bookmark this page', and at the 'Add BooKmark' window specify a name for this page, which will be displayed on the bookmarks menu. *) To revisit a bookmarked site in Internet Explorer, from the 'Favorites' menu select the bookmark you want. The page will then be loaded. *) To revisit a bookmarked site in Firefox, from the 'Bookmarks' menu select the bookmark you want. The page will then be loaded.
